Part of the magic of this part of the world is that the weather conditions can and do frequently change in a matter of minutes.  The reason for this is that you are traveling through a lot of passes along the Canadian Rockies and Continental Divide. which doesn't exactly allow for seeing a lot of open sky.  And even if you could see what may lie ahead from a mountain top vantage point, these weather systems have a peculiar way of moving through the mountains which I can say the local quality weather reporting reflects.
